Birding Ethics

  1. Never disturb a nest or den.
  2. Stay on roads, trails and pathways to minimize habitat disturbance.
  3. Do not feed, bait or use recorded calls or mechanisms to attract wildlife.
  4. Do not interfere with the wildlife being observed.
  5. Pet owners should observe leash regulations and never allow an unleashed dog to disturb birds.
  6. Observe from a distance and use your binoculars or spotting scope to get a closer look.
  7. Practice “leave no trace” principles.
    • Plan ahead and prepare
    • Carry out what you carry in, dispose of waste properly
    • Leave behind what you find, minimize your impacts
    • Respect wildlife
    • Be considerate of other visitors
  8. Do not enter private property without permission.
  9. Follow all laws governing the use of roads and public areas.
  10. Respect the space of other observers and wait for your turn to view animals.
  11. Share your experiences as your enthusiasm may generate interest in others.
