Kings Mountain Hiking Trail

Area Location

Take exit 2 from I85 north, (you will travel into and out of North Carolina), approximately 2.5 miles from the freeway on Highway 216 is the entrance to the park. Turn left out of the visitors center parking lot to head into the state park. Turn left onto Lake Crawford Rd ater 2.9 miles. Travel just under 1 mile to the parking lot and head uphill to the trailhead.

Admission: $2 for adults.

Hours of Operation:

Kings Mountain Military Park is open 9:00 – 5:00 daily.

Kings Mountain State Park is  open in winter from 8:00 – 6:00, and from 8:00 – 9:00 in summer.

Facilities

Background

Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park combine to make up Kings Mountain. This covers almost 11,000 acres and 30 trail miles. While the elevation reaches over 1,000 feet, the scenic views are not superb. The best birding is done in this area in April/May and September/October.

Battlefield Trail, a 1.5 mile paved loop is at its best during fall migration.

Barred Owl, Red-headed Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, White-breasted Nuthatch, Chipping Sparrow.

Spring

Migrating warblers.

Summer

Great Crested Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Red-eyed Vireo, Wood Thrush, Kentucky Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, Ovenbird, Summer Tanager, Scarlet Tanager, Purple Finch.

Winter

Brown Creeper, Fox Sparrow, Purple Finch.
