Head south on Highway 171 toward Folly Beach, turn left onto Harbor View Road. Approximately 3.7 miles to a T intersection, turn left and the gate will be approximately .8 miles ahead.

Admission: $1 per person.

Hours of Operation: James Island County Park is open 8:00 – 8:00 in summer months, and open 8:00 – 6:00 in winter months.

Fort Johnson is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 – 5:00.

Highlights of James Island include Fort Johnson (military operations were based here during the Civil and Revolutionary Wars), Fort Johnson Point, James Island County Park.

Birding is best from August through May.

Yellow-crowned Night-heron, Mississippi Kite, Gull-billed Tern, Sandwich Tern, Least Tern, Black Skimmer, Painted Bunting, Osprey.

Fall

Migrating Warbler

Red-throated Loon, Horned Grebe, Northern Gannet, Bald Eagle, Great Black-backed Gull, Saltmarsh Sparrow, Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow.
