Drive south towards Edisto Island on Highway 174 from the intersection of Highway 174/U.S. 17. After 3.6 miles turn right onto Highway 164, from there the entrance is approximately 2 miles.

Background

Highlights of this area include the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge (aka the Grove Plantation) – this is en route to Edisto Island, Grove Plantation House, Edisto Beach State Park Interpretive Center.

Edisto Island and ACE Basin NWR are part of the ACE Basin – Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto – three rivers which form the basin in St. Helena Sound.

The best birding times are April through June.

Least Bittern, Swallow-tailed Kite, Mississippi Kite, Least Tern, Black Skimmer, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Viero, Prothonotary Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, Painted Bunting, Orchard Oriole, Bachman’s Sparrow, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Northern Parula, Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

Winter
