From Mt. Pleasant take Highway 17 north, turn right onto Seewee Road (looks for Garris Landing signs). After approximately 3.4 miles turn right onto Bulls Island Road.

Admission: Free.

Hours of Operation: Daylight.

The only way to access this island is by private boat.

There are two week-long scheduled hunts starting on the first Mondays of November and December.

Background

Visit the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center if this is your first trip to the refuge (located on Highway 17). They offer trail maps and ferry schedules.

Birding is good year-round in this area.

 

Other excellent areas to bird are Bull Island, Garris Landing, and Jacks Creek.

Black-crowned Night-heron, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron, White Ibis, Wood Stork, Mottled Duck, American Oystercatcher, Common Ground-Dove, Loggerhead Shrike, Seaside Sparrow.

Summer

Anhinga, Least Bittern, Reddish Egret, Yellow-crowned Night-heron, Glossy Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Swallow-tailed Kite, Mississippi Kite, Wilson’s Plover, Sandwich Tern, Least Tern, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Painted Bunting.

Winter

Red-throated Loon, Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Northern Gannet, American Bittern, Tundra Swan, American Black Duck, Northern Pintail, Canvasback, Redhead Scaup, Greater Scaup, Lesser Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, Black Scooter, White-winged Scooter, Surf Scooter, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Bald Eagle, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Piping Plover, Whimbrel, Long-billed Curlew, Red Knot, Purple Sandpiper, Bonaparte’s Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Orange-crowned Warbler, Saltmarsh Sparrow, Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow.
